Product Overview

Estate planner Penny Thornton loves dusting off items others gloss over, especially since she relates to feeling tossed aside for the "bright and shiny." When her younger sister's approaching wedding launches Penny back into the throes of her dysfunctional family, she decides to use the festivities to close the gap in their relationships even if it means appeasing them and finally losing the few pounds they've hounded her about for years. But she doesn't expect to meet two very different men in the process: East Fisher, the personal trainer who personifies everything she believes she could never attain, and Jonah Black, a man who reminds her so much of herself. Both men are more than they appear at first glance, and each seems interested in her romantically. As Penny uncovers their hidden layers, she discovers when it comes to love and matters of the heart, she's got a lot to learn about estimating value. At First Glance by Susan L. L. Tuttle

    Beautiful story!

I have heard so many good things about this story that I’m not sure why I waited so long to read it. At First Glance is a wonderful deeply layered story that will make you feel so invested in the characters. There are ones you will completely love - Hello, Jonah! - ones you might struggle with a bit - I’m looking at you, Penny! - and ones you will totally dislike - a lot! Jonah is my favorite character from this story. What he does for his sister and nephew - amazing. And what he does for Penny? Well, you’ll just have to read it to find out.

    Brilliant novel

Posted by Shona on Oct 25th 2019

Penny, a girl who doesn’t know her own self worth. Jonah, a guy who wants to prove to her she’s beautiful, inside and out. A novel which explores how we can view ourselves and each other ‘at first glance’. Then sets out to prove our worth is found in inner beauty and Jesus. I loved this book so much. Penny’s struggle with her self esteem was so real. The desire to be accepted and loved, not for who she is but instead for what she looks like was so moving. The lies we hear from others who tell us we’re never good enough - our bodies aren’t perfect, we’re not wearing the right clothes, the scars which detract from our looks - can define who we believe ourselves to be. This novel shows us that “beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭3:3-4‬ A gripping, often funny, extremely moving read. Highly recommended!

    Great Debut Novel

Posted by Melissa Romine on Oct 25th 2019

Susan L. Tuttle’s debut novel At First Glance is chock full of romance, spiritual lessons, and people you wish you could slap. Penny Thornton has always felt judged by others based on her outside appearance and not her true worth. Always overshadowed by her beautiful sister, Penny hasn’t dated very much or had the type of relationship she wanted. Suddenly, she finds herself with two guys interested in her. How will she chose? Susan Tuttle writes an often heartbreaking story of how other’s opinions can so negatively affect someone’s outlook on life. I found myself so angry at many of the characters in this book and cheering Penny on to discover her value. An author that makes me feel those kinds of emotions is definitely writing a story worth reading. A friend of mine once told me, “We spend too much time comparing our insides to someone else’s outsides.” I so wanted Penny to learn this lesson and to pick the right guy that I kept reading until I finished! I enjoyed this book and hope that Susan Tuttle will continue to write many more!

    Finding true value

Posted by Klkfrog on Oct 25th 2019

This was an amazing book. I loved the story and the characters. Both were well developed and I couldn't pull myself away from the story. I lost sleep because I had to finish this book. Penelope is a woman that doesn't think very highly of herself in the looks department, but she comes from a family that values looks above all other things. I love her realness and the way she interacts with the two men that seem to have a romantic interest in her. Jonah was such a big teddy bear and I love his backstory. He is a great man of integrity and faith. East is your typical ladies-man that has the looks and the confidence to work it. He's also a player. The author did an amazing job of making Penelope's reactions to East realistic. My only issue with this book was the unsatisfactory ending for the secondary characters. I look forward to finding out if they will each have their own stories in the future. However, Penelope gets her happy ending: with who- gotta read to find out! I highly recommend this book to those that are not satisfied with their looks or with life in general. This book is a MUST READ!! I received a complimentary copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.

    Wonderful Debut

I started this book on the weekend and didn’t get anything else done because I could not put it down. Tuttle’s memorable characters quickly found a way into my heart and the lessons they learned along the way were helpful. The romantic tension added to this enjoyable story. I can only say that I can’t wait to read more from this author and a sequel would be wonderful.
